A collection of echocardiogram images and video clips that have been labeled #S4C (Subcostal 4 Chamber). As with the apical four-chamber view, you will be able to assess the 4 chambers of the heart, especially the right ventricle. This view makes it easy to see visualize a pericardial effusion. As you are imaging the interatrial septum in perpendicular fashion, you can also identify atrial septal defects on this view. This view is excellent in emergency situations as the patient lays supine. You can view the entire pericardium, assess overall ventricular function and volume status. Patients with chest wounds or surgical coverings that prohibit apical and parasternal scanning may benefit from the subcostal view.
