Causes of Hypernatremia - Differential Diagnosis
Inadequate water intake:
 • Lack of access to water
Extrarenal hypotonic fluid loss:
 • GI losses or perspiration
Renal concentrating defect:
 • Diuretics
 • Osmotic diuresis
 • Central diabetes insipidus
 • Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus
Excessive salt intake:
 • Hypertonic fluid administration
