Salmonella Aspiration on Microscopy

66 y/o male with history of coronary artery disease presents with abdominal pain. CT abd/pelvis shows an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a periaortic collection. Gram stain of aspiration by international radiology shown below . Diagnosis ?

The answer is non typhoidal salmonella. A classic case! Non typhoidal Salmonella. Is a major cause of aortitis, in some series second most common after staph (15-24%). Is usually secondary to seeding of atherscleortic plaques.
