Medications causing Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
Prerenal:
• Dehydration: Diuretics
• Altered intrarenal autoregulation: ACEIs / ARBs, NSAIDs, calcineurin inhibitors (e.g. cyclosporine, tacrolimus)
Intrarenal:
• ATN: Aminoglycosides, cisplatin, tenofovir
• AIN: Beta-lactams, vancomycin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim), NSAIDs
• Crystal nephropathy: Acyclovir, ganciclovir, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, methotrexate
Postrenal -↓ bladder sensation, impaired detrusor contraction, and/or ↑ urinary sphincter tone:
• Opiates
• Sympathomimetics (e.g. nasal decongestants)
• Any drug with anticholinergic effects (e.g. antihistamines, TCAs, SSRIs, some antiemetics)
