• Emphasize and teach about the increased lifelong risk of severe infection and sepsis
• Vaccinate against pneumococcal, meningococcal, H. influenzae type b, and influenza
• Provide emergency use antibiotic prophylaxis ("pill-in-pocket")
• Prepare an appropriate action plan in case of illness. Pt should seek medical advice for:
- Fever or systemic infection
- Animal bites or scratches
- Tick bites
• Discuss pre-travel counseling, especially if to a malaria endemic area
