Indications for Head CT before LP:
 • Age > 60
 • Immunocompromise (e.g., HIV)
 • History of central nervous system (CNS) disease
 • Recent seizure (within I week)
 • Altered mental status
 • Focal neurologic defects
If a patient had none of the above clinical characteristics, he or she had only a 1% risk of having a mass effect on head CT.
