Acute Pharyngitis: Differential Diagnosis
Infectious:
 • Respiratory viruses (25-45%)
 • Group A Strep (5-15%)
 • Other bacteria: Group C and G strep, Mycoplasma and Chlamydia species, Corynebacterium, Pharyngeal tularemia
 • STDs: Acute Retroviral Syndrome, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum
 • Diffuse viral syndromes: EBV, CMV
Noninfectious:
 • Allergic rhinitis or sinusitis
 • GERD
 • Smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke
 • Exposure to dry air
 • Vocal strain
 • Trauma (intubation)
 • Malignancy: Lymphoma, SCC
 • Autoimmune disorders: Kawasaki disease, PFAPA, Behcet syndrome
