Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) - Post-Exposure Prophylaxis
Varicella or Disseminated Zoster:
 • Transmission: direct contact w/ fluid of vesicles or inhalation of aerosols
 • Exposure: non immune person has face-to-face contact w/ pt for >5 minutes
 • Timeline: 1-2d pre rash until lesions crusted
Localized Zoster:
 • Transmission: direct contact w/ fluid of vesicles
 • Exposure: non-immune person has direct contact w/ pt (e.g., vesicles)
 • Timeline: until lesions crusted
PEP = varicella vaccination w/in 5d if eligible to receive
 • 90% efficacy if given by 3d, 70% efficacy if given by 5d 
 • ELIGIBILITY FOR VACCINATION as prophylaxis:
    - Age >12mo, not pregnant
    - Not immunocompromised
    - No history of severe reaction to varicella vaccine or component
