Anatomy of the Knee X-ray - Lateral View.⁣⁣
It’s important to be able to identify the normal structures not only to identify the abnormality but to describe it as well!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ A systematic review involves multiple views but I typically use the lateral view to check out the following:
⁣⁣⁣1. Effusion or collection - the anterior suprapatellar fat pad and pre femoral fat pad should be adjacent to each other. A soft tissue density between them should raise the possibility of an effusion. (More about that in a later post!) ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣2. Patella - apart from fractures, the patellar position and the patella tendon should be looked at. A bipartite patella should not be confused for a fracture!⁣ ⁣⁣
3. Calcification - loose bodies, fabella, SOCM can all be distinguished by looking at their distribution and characteristics!⁣⁣
