Basophilia - Differential Diagnosis Framework

Basophils < 1% of the total white blood cell count
Basophils function similarly to mast cells- contain histamine in their granules which are released during an allergic reaction or asthma attack

Is It A Real Basophilia?
 • Pseudobasophilia possible.
 • Statistical error/delay in processing

Myeloproliferative Disorders:
 • Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
	- associated with the BCR-ABL1 fusion gene - reciprocal t(9;22) translocation
 • Acute myeloid leukemia
	- Basophils + circulating blasts
 • Polycythemia Vera
 • Essential thrombocythemia
 • Acute basophilic leukemia

Hypersensitivity Or Inflammatory Reactions:
 • Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease
 • Asthma

Hypothyroidism (Myxedema)

Diabetes/DKA

Infections:
 • helminth infections
 • Tuberculosis
 • Influenza
 • Chickenpox

Other Causes:
 • Iron deficiency
 • Irradiation
 • Cirrhosis
 • Estrogen therapy
