Tympanic Membrane during Valsalva - Otoscopy By plugging our noses and blowing to unclog our ears, what we are doing is putting air into the middle ear, through the tube that connects the back of the nose with the ear, called the “Eustachian tube”. The function of this tube is to equalize the pressures of the environment with that of the middle ear and it is very important in situations of sudden pressure changes, such as when landing and airplane or diving. In the video, we see how the tympanic membrane moves when blowing with a stuffy nose (Valsalva maneuver).
