Laryngomalacia on Laryngoscopy
Laryngomalacia is a flaccidity of an area of the throat (supraglottic larynx) that causes the tissues to be sucked into the airway each time the child inspires.
In general, symptoms appear at 2-4 weeks of age and progressively worsen over the next few months. The main symptom is a type of noisy breathing called stridor.
80-90% of patients have mild symptoms and only require observation. Patients with more intense symptoms, with difficulty breathing, oxygenate or feeding, may require surgery.
The surgery is done through the mouth, using laryngoscopy, and consists of removing excess tissue that collapses the airway (supraglottoplasty). Sometimes the epiglottic cartilage must also be sutured to the base of the tongue (epiglottoplasty).
