Hematuria Workup and Diagnosis Algorithm • Confirm hematuria → Urinalysis >3 RBCs/HPF, exclude mimics, repeat testing • Acute onset and unilateral flank pain present? → Evaluate for nephrolithiasis • Symptoms of UTI, urine WBCs, or urine nitrites? → Urine culture and treat for UTI • Evidence of glomerular bleeding (proteinuria, RBC casts, dysmorphic RBCs)? → Refer to Nephrology for renal biopsy • Risk factors for malignancy present? → CT urography and referral to Urology for cystoscopy • Refer to Nephrology if cause not identified by UW IM Residency @uw_IMresidency #Hematuria #Diagnosis #Algorithm #Workup #urology #blood #urine
