Hantavirus
Pathogen: Hantavirus - Rodents are the primary reservoir
Transmission:
 • Shed in the urine, feces, saliva of infected rodents
 • Aerosol is the most common route of infection
 • Activities: Cutting wood, cleaning cellars, barns and lake houses
 • Person-to-person transmission is rare
Presentation:
 • Incubation is 1 to 6 weeks
 • Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS): Febrile illness + ARDS like findings + previously healthy person
 • Prodrome: fever, chills, myalgias, nausea, vomiting, weakness +/- diarrhea
Diagnosis: 
 • Specific anti-hantavirus IgM
 • Hantavirus PCR
 • Autopsy PCR
Treatment:
 • Supportive: ICU monitoring, vasopressors, mechanical ventilation
 • ECMO, HD
