Post-Hypoxic Spinal Flutter on Physical Exam

Post hypoxic spinal flutter - spontaneous and sternal compression inducible rhythmic high frequency ‘fluttering’ movements of the quadriceps bilaterally. These movements lasted up to 10 minutes and occurred every 30-45 minutes.

There was also intermittent diaphragmatic myoclonus independent of the lower limb movements. On day 3, surface EMG was obtained from the steromastoid, brachioradialis, thoracic, paraspinal, quadriceps and tibialis anterior muscles. High frequency 8-9 Hz bilaterally symmetrical rhythmic movements were picked up from the lower thoracic paraspinal and quadriceps muscles alone. The upper paraspinals did not show any surface EMG discharges.
