Apley Distraction Test on Knee Examination

With the patient prone, the knee being tested is flexed to 90 degrees while the other leg is fully extended. The examiner applies a distraction force on the leg, while applying internal and external rotation. The distraction reduces the force applied to the meniscus. Pain is indicative of a ligamentous rather than meniscal injury (seen with compression test).
