Gangrenous Frostbite Hand Injury on Physical Exam

Mountain climber Fahad Badar experienced frostbite during an expedition to Broad Peak mountain in Pakistan. At first, his fingertips were numb, then the pain gradually increased. The frostbite was so severe that the fingertips were dead and there was no pain at all. The fingers turned black and hardened. This is called mummification or dry gangrene. He was eventually scheduled for surgery to remove his dead fingertips.
