Rhodococcus - Microbiology Overview

Microbiology:
 • Facultative, intracellular, nonmotile, non-spore-forming
 • Aerobic acid-fast gram-positive coccobacilli
 • Produces pale salmon-pink colonies on solid media
 • Exposure
Reservoir: 
 • Farm soil, Manure, Horse farms
 • Warmer climates, worldwide distribution except Antartica
Transmission (Zoonotic disease):
 • Exposure to soil contaminated with herbivore manure
 • Inhalation or ingestion of contaminated material
 • Direct inoculation due to trauma
Diagnosis
Treatment:
 • Azithromycin OR Moxifloxacin
       AND
 • One of the following: Rifampin, Vancomycin, Imipenem, Linezolid
