Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) Criteria - Definitions of Sepsis, Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock

Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) 
Two or more of the following criteria: 
1 Heart rate > 90 
2 Temp > 100.40F (380C) or < 96.80F (360C) 
3 Respiratory rate > 20 or PaC02 < 32 mm Hg 
4 WBC > 12,000/mm3 or < 4,000/mm3, or > 1096 band forms 

Sepsis = SIRS + Suspected or present source of infection 
Severe Sepsis = Sepsis + Lactic Acidosis or SBP < 90 or SBP drop > 40 (Organ dysfunction, Hypotension, or hypoperfusion) 
Septic Shock = Severe Sepsis + Hypotension, despite adequate fluid resuscitation
