The differential diagnosis for an elevated MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) includes:

Conditions with Abnormal RBCs:
 • Abnormal RBC 
 • Spherocytosis 
 • Sickle cells
 • Hemoglobin C
 • Xerocytosis
 • RBC agglutination

Situations where plasma opacification leads to a falsely elevated Hgb:
 • Hyperlipidemia 
 • Hemolysis (i.e., free hemoglobin)
