HIV Antiretroviral Pharmacokinetic Boosters - Ritonavir & Cobicistat

Ritonavir & Cobicistat are 2 pharmacokinetic boosters used in HIV treatment to increase levels of antiretrovirals so that they can be more effective. They are both CYP3A4 INHIBITORS, which means they lower the metabolism of drugs and increase the levels. Ritonavir is actually a protease inhibitor and a 3A4 inhibitor, while cobicistat is just a 3A4 inhibitor with no antiretroviral properties. They both have lots of drug interactions because of the CYP inhibition, but cobicistat has less side effects since it is not actually an ARV.
