Hypertension Medications that Require Tapering to Discontinue: Beta Blockers + Clonidine
Beta-blockers and clonidine (alpha2 agonist) are medications that can be used to treat hypertension (although not first-line). Important thing about these is that if you want to stop these medications, you need to taper. If these medications are stopped abruptly, it will result in rebound hypertension which can cause the patients BP to skyrocket and likely end up in the hospital or have severe complications. There are multiple ways or schedules to taper these drugs, but essentially you lower the dose in increments over 1-4 weeks, depending on the dose and patient risk factors.
