Lyrica (Pregabalin)
Indications: Neuropathy (diabetic, postherpetic neuralgia, fibromyalgia, & spinal cord injury), Adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures
Dosing Considerations:
- Adjust based on renal function
- Taper drug over at least 1 week
Since pregabalin (Lyrica) was just approved as a generic, let's review the drug! Primary indications for pregabalin include as adjunctive therapy for seizures and for nerve pain (including diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia, PHN, & pain from spinal cord injury). It needs to be renally dose adjusted, and it's important to counsel patients that this drug will likely cause dizziness and somnolence. Patients mood should also be monitored. On a federal level (and here in Hawaii) it's categorized as a C5 drug.
