Bupropion (Zyban) - Smoking Cessation Bupropion (sustained release Zyban, not immediate release Wellbutrin) is a good option for smoking cessation. Since it takes about 1 week for stable blood levels, it's recommended to start bupropion 1-2 weeks prior to the patients scheduled quit date. It's available in 150 mg tablets, and patients take 1 tab daily for the first 3 days before increasing to 1 tab BID. After about 2-3 months of therapy, if patient feels stable and has been successfully not smoking, clinicians can discuss discontinuing the medication at that time.
