Uric Acid Homeostasis In the liver, purines are metabolized to uric acid. The last step in purine metabolism involves an enzyme called xanthine oxidase. In animals, the enzyme uricase converts uric acid to allantoin, a highly soluble compound. Uricase is not present in humans. The gout drug pegloticase (Krystexxa) is a recombinant version of uricase. The intestines eliminate about 1/3 of the daily uric acid produced The kidneys eliminate about 2/3 of the daily uric acid produced.
