Galant Reflex on Physical Exam

The Galant reflex is present at birth and remains until the 2nd month of life. It is elecited by applying a stimulus in the paravertebral region in the cephalocaudal direction. In response, there is lateral curving or lateroflexion of the trunk on the same side of the study, where the pelvis is pulled up and flexion of the inner limb on the same side can occur.

The galant reaction is inhibited by the input of the flexor control that allows trunk control. Its persistence prevents the baby from sitting, falling to one side in front of any stimulus applied to the side of the trunk, which suggests a possible change in tone. It usually presents persistent in cases of atetoid type cerebral palsy.
