Convalescent Plasma in COVID-19: Why It Might Work
Convalescent plasma (CP) as a passive antibody therapy has been explored since the 1890's and generated significant interest
during the 1918 and 2009 influenza pandemics, and more recently, the West African Ebola epidemic1-5. Studies from these periods
were promising, but not conclusive. Therefore, this treatment may benefit patients with COVID-19.
Plasma is the liquid part of blood that remains after RBCs, WBCs, and PLTs are removed. CP is plasma gathered from patients who have
recovered from a certain infection (e.g. COVID-19) and thus have antibodies to it, which may help new patients fight the infection6.
