It consists of marked contraction of the lateral face of the quadriceps femoris muscle in response to cutaneous stimulation on the face of the homolateral foot (plantar skin reflex). Although the reflex may be present in healthy individuals, a very pronounced response reflects injury to the cortico-spinal tract.
