Myoedema in Hypothyroidism on Physical Exam

Hypothyroidism is a clinical syndrome resulting from the production, secretion or inadequate action of thyroid hormones, with varied clinical symptoms, due to the presence of receptors for thyroid hormone in almost all tissues. There are several symptoms that can occur, such as: tiredness, drowsiness, weight gain, dry and scaly skin, myopathy and others.
Myopathy due to hypothyroidism is characterized by muscle weakness, which is predominantly proximal, cramps, myalgia, myoedema, and may be associated with prolonged or abolished tendon reflexes and altered sensitivity.
Myoedema (shown in the video) is the formation of an elevation in the muscular belly that occurs after percussion by the reflex hammer, caused by the delayed uptake of calcium by the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
