Continence mechanisms are impaired
 • Local neuronal damage
 • External and Internal anal sphincter impairment
Continence mechanisms are intact, but overwhelmed or ignored
 • Movement Disorders
 • Inflammation of colon (e.g., Ulcerative colitis, Radiation proctitis)
 • Chronic diarrhea, diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, laxatives
 • Chronic constipation
 • Sensory neuropathy (e.g. Diabetes)
 • Altered mental conditions (e.g. stroke, dementia)
