Dilated Fluid Filled Stomach with Respiratory Variation on POCUS
Here is the story... Young patient with rapidly progressive systemic sclerosis. Anasarca. Known gastroparesis and esophagitis. In ICU for shock. I was looking for a subcostal 4-chamber view (transducer at midline, US beam pointing to the left).
What you see it is a massively dilated stomach with gastric content. The swirling and the to-fro seen beside aorta, I believe it is fluid-air content moving from stomach to the esophagus during breaths (patient developed ARDS). We inserted a large NGT with drainage of 1.7 L!
