Reduction of Patellar Dislocation
Most patellar dislocations are lateral, and they often reduce on their own. But sometimes they need a little help. ⁣⁣
⁣Tips for reducing a dislocated patella:⁣⁣
 • have the patient sit or recline with hips slightly flexed⁣⁣
 • apply gentle pressure on the lateral aspect of the patella as you extend the knee⁣⁣
 • usually pain meds are not needed for the procedure, but, if the patient can’t tolerate it, consider a femoral nerve block or ketorolac⁣⁣
 • obtain post-reduction x-rays (AP, lateral, and sunrise)⁣⁣
 • give the patient a knee immobilizer and crutches - they should have follow-up within a week for early mobilization and rehab⁣⁣
