HSV Herpetic Whitlow Infection of the Finger 20 F presents with painful finger, treated w/ oral cephalexin without any improvement. Diagnosis? Herpetic whitlow hsv infection of finger. Complication of primary oral or genital herpes by inoculation of virus into the hand through occupational or other exposure Abrupt onset of edema, erythema, localized tenderness of finger. Vesicular/pustules kesion are tough to distinguish from bacterial infection. Fever and lymphadenopathy are common occupational risk: medical/dental workers, hairdressers or thumbsucking kids. rare: may go under recognised or be mistaken for bacterial infection of finger.
