Howell-Jolly Body - On these Wright-stained peripheral blood smears the small dark spheres within red cells are Howell-Jolly bodies. Note the variation in size. These bodies represent residual nuclear DNA which, under normal circumstances, is removed by the spleen. There can be more than one H-J body within a red cell. Also seen are a poikilocyte in the left photo and target cells in the right photo. Howell-Jolly bodies are often seen when there is loss of splenic function as in congenital asplenia, after surgical removal, or in autosplenectomy in sickle cell anemia. They also can be found in hemolytic anemia. pernicious anemia, thalassemia, and leukemia. #Clinical #Path #BloodSmear #Blood #Smear #HowellJollyBody #Howell #Jolly #Asplenia
