Alcohol Use Disorder: Pathogenesis and Clinical Findings

 • Tolerance (reduced sensitivity to effects of EtOH)
 • Social Impairment
    - Failure to fulfill role obligations (work, school, home)
    - Continued use despite social problems exacerbated by EtOH
    - Important social, occupational, recreational activities reduced
 • Risky Substance Use
    - Recurrent use of alcohol in hazardous situations
    - Continued use despite knowledge of consequences
 • Impaired Control 
    - Incr in alcohol consumption
    - Unsuccessful attempts to reduce alcohol use
    - Incr in time spent pursuing / using / recovering from EtOH
    - Alcohol craving - Intense desire to use EtOH
 • Withdrawal symptoms
    - Sweating, tachycardia, nausea/vomiting, tremor, insomnia, seizure, and anxiety
