Psychological Hypothesis
 • Cognitive behavioral model: Emotional disturbance arising from dysfunctional beliefs about situations or stimuli
 • Avoidance/Compulsions maintain maladaptive beliefs and anxiety
Biological Hypotheses
 • Serotonin: Hypersensitivity of postsynaptic serotonin receptors -> Dysregulation of anxiety
 • Structural model: Dysfunction of brain circuits in the oribito-frontal-subcortical regions suspected
Genetics
 • 27-47% heritability in twin studies

Obsessions - Unwanted/intrusive thoughts, ideas, images, impulses that intrude into consciousness 
Compulsions - Urges to perform overt behavioural or mental rituals to reduce obsessional anxiety or distress about feared consequences
